. The actual study of ethnic identity is conditioned by the previous socio-political context. In the West, attention to ethnic identity is a marker of post-colonial studies, while in Russia it is a departure from the formation of a new historical community "Soviet people". Accordingly, the cognitive goals of studying ethnic identity also diff er from the manipulation of ethnic identities, leading to the split in a previously unifi ed society, to identifying factors that contribute to the preservation of ethnic minority cultures.

При анализе национально-этнических проблем обращение к идеям П. А . Сорокина столетней
давности представляется оправданным и необходимым. Отвергая биологический подход к
анализу этнонации, он не отвергает ее объективного бытия. Определение этнонации пред-
полагает указание наиболее существенных признаков, но отсутствие одного или нескольких
признаков не лишает понятия «этнонация» смысла в конкретных исторических и географиче-
ских условиях.

The article presents the analysis of theories and hypotheses of foreign as well as Russian authors who studied social aspects of the media. The value of various scientific schools which developed their own interpretations and ideas is noted, however all the analyzed theories reveal the social character of this means of communication. The aim of the research is to explain the theoretical foundation to study the media as a social phenomenon as well as examining the notion of a suicide in the perspective of the media theory.
