On the basis of the results of the sociological study of Saratov residents (n = 1200 respondents), conducted by the method of the Internet questionnaire, it is shown that charity in Russia today is a very significant social institution that continues the social policy of the state. It performs a variety of important functions and, unlike the state, quickly responds to the changes taking place in society, eff ectively solves problems, especially at the local and regional levels. Therefore, it is positively perceived by society. More than a third of Saratov residents are consistently engaged in charity. The desire Saratov residents is not systematic and is caused by a number of certain situations. A tangible barrier here is the lack of transparency of many charitable organizations, poor information of the population about their activities. The author's survey revealed a close direct connection between charity and the standard of living of the population. The higher the income, the greater the share of philanthropists. The second important characteristic is the interconnection of charity and the satisfaction of fellow citizens with their lives. The higher the level of this satisfaction, the more often Saratov residents are engaged in charity.
